PhD/PD Council

At SILS, PhD candidates (including bursaries) and Postdocs make up about 2/3rd of all staff. This means that they bring a huge contribution to the research and education performed at the institute. The SILS PhD/PD Council serves the interests of all PhDs and PDs at SILS. We also have a representative in the Faculty (FNWI) PhD Council and the UvA Central (CPC) PhD Council. SILS PhD/PD Council

The SILS PhD/PD Council is established to stimulate social coherence in the PhD/PD community and to serve as an interface between PhD candidates, Postdocs and the Institute management. Through this interface we want to communicate and discuss specific problems encountered by this group directly with the Institute director.
Our main goals are to stimulate an open and social environment, serve as a feedback mechanism for SILS management representing the PhDs and Postdocs and to help communicate management decisions to the community. 

What we do

We organise events specifically for PhDs and Postdocs, as well as scientific events for the whole institute such as seminars and symposia, next to social events such as (in Dutch) 'borrels'.

Yearly, we organise the SILS research day with the focus to highlight ongoing research in the institute. We stimulate career events to give PhDs and Postdocs ideas as to how they can continue their scientific careers in a variety of interesting fields. Another way in which the council keeps SILS members updated on research within the institute is through the monthly SILS-seminars.

To foster open communication and collaboration between researchers at all (un)scientific levels, we organise regular drinks to which all PhDs, Postdocs and staff of SILS are cordially invited to socialise and get to know each other. We also closely liaise with other institute councils and the FNWI PhD council.
