At SILS, we value creating a safe social environment. We aim to prevent undesirable behaviour. On this page you can find more background on this and an overview of services and departments you can turn to when experiencing unsafe situations.

Social safety at the UvA

The UvA, and SILS as well, is committed to providing a positive study and work environment in which we treat each other with respect, nobody feels unsafe and everyone can develop their talents. We want everyone to be assured they have a safe basis for their work or studies and, if necessary, to conduct difficult or critical conversations. Students and staff must have the opportunity to address concerns, dilemmas and complaints within the UvA. They must feel they are safe to do so and that their report or complaint will be taken seriously.

Until end-2020 an UvA taskforce will be working on an integrated approach to strengthening social safety for staff and students. They have set up a webpage with information on available support, policy and other information regarding social safety at the UvA.

Social safety at SILS

If you experience a situation in which you feel like action should be taken or you want to talk to someone, please check the above standing page for possible options and an overview of confidential advisors available. It is up to you to choose whom to contact from the available confidential advisors (so you don't need to fit this to your institute / faculty).
If you are unsure whom to talk to, feel the need to reflect on something, or if you don't know what steps to take, you are also very welcome to come talk to any of the institute management members or our SILS PhD/PD Council. We strive for an open door policy so please come in!

Diversity, equity and inclusion

The topic of social safety can link closely to diversity, equity and inclusion topics. At SILS we have a diversity committee. If you want to know more about this, check their webpage on diversity.
