The Faculty of Science (FNWI) signed The Transparancy Agreement on Animal Testing on behalf of the UvA. This is a nation-wide initiative in which universities, university medical centres, scientific institutes, companies and associations work together to promote openness about animal testing.

Communicating transparently about animals in scientific procedures
The group that has signed the agreement consists of 22 nation-wide parties involved in conducting, supporting or funding the use of animals in scientific procedures to improve human and animal health, quality of life and the environment. The signatories aim to communicate clearly how they conduct research if animal testing is necessary in the process and share their experiences on this annually.

Animal testing at the UvA
At the UvA, research using laboratory animals takes place at the Swammerdam Institute of Life Sciences on a limited scale, when non-animal alternatives are not possible. This research is needed to understand (the development of) cancer and brain diseases like dementia, epilepsy, depression, addiction and anxiety in humans and also to prevent or develop treatments for such diseases.

The UvA has been taking various measures for years to ensure that animal testing meets those principles. For example, researchers are allowed to work with animals only after thorough training and testing, external reviews are performed and animal experiments cannot proceed without a permit.
