How do gut bacteria help our health? This is what microbiologist Mink Sieders' research is about. Mink Sieders, PhD candidate in the group of Prof. dr. Sahar El Aidy (Microbiome Engineering) joined the “Faces of Science". In this role, he reveals what his life as a starting scientist looks like.

In total, the KNAW has selected twelve young researchers as new 'Faces of Science'. The Faces of Science will give an insight into their research and life as a young scientist. Through blogs, videos and presentations, they share their discoveries, fascinations and challenges. In this way they make science accessible and show how versatile and inspiring science is.

Mink Sieders (Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences):

Our intestines are full of bacteria. In the laboratory, we often study these bacteria under artificial, strictly controlled conditions, which do not always correspond well to the situation in your body. This is why Sieders is developing models that better mimic the natural conditions in your gut. These models provide more accurate insight into how bacteria communicate with each other, influence our health and contribute to disease.
