Courses we are involved in:

Human Genome Biology and Evolution (5234HGBE6Y)

6 ECT; Master’s level elective course; End of November-mid-December (Semester 1, period 2)

Coordinator: Frank Jacobs

This course is aimed at 1st and 2nd year MSc students in the Biomedical/(Neuro)Biological Sciences with an interest in human genomics, genomic evolution of the human species and the genetics of human (neurological) diseases. In this course the student will become familiar with current concepts and challenges in these exciting fields and state of the art experimental techniques used to address these issues. Topics such as genomic evolution, epigenetics, non-coding DNA, comparative biology, the genomic impact of transposable elements and genomics of disease susceptibility will be covered. As the red line throughout this course, we will discuss and explore which recent evolutionary changes have contributed to our species and to which extent some of these changes may have made humans more susceptible to human diseases.

Current Issues in Developmental Biology (5234CIID6Y)

6 ECT; Master’s level elective course; Feb-April, 1 night per week (Semester 2, period 4, 5)

Coordinator: Frank Jacobs & Renée van Amerongen

This course is aimed at 1st and 2nd year MSc students in the Biomedical/(Neuro)Biological Sciences with an interest in developmental biology. In this course the student will learn how to read, critically evaluate, present, discuss and review high-impact research articles in the fields of developmental biology and stem cell biology. The student will become familiar with current concepts and challenges in these fields and state of the art experimental techniques used to address these issues.

Internships

We regularly host BSc and MSc students in our lab. Please contact dr. Frank Jacobs for opportunities.
