Stanley Brul (1964) was trained as Biochemist and graduated “cum laude” in 1986. In 1991 he obtained a PhD at the AMC in Amsterdam. He went in 1990 as a post-doctoral fellow to Nijmegen University (Microbiology and Evolutionary Biology) and obtained an NWO (NATO) TALENT Stipendium . In 1994 Stanley Brul moved to Unilever R & D and after several roles as program manager and professor on the endowed chair in Industrial Molecular Microbiology Stanley Brul moved in 2002 to the University of Amsterdam as full professor of Molecular Biology & Microbial Food Safety (MBMFS). From 2002-2007 he was also still employed as senior Scientist at Unilever and was master-track coordinator Medical Biochemistry at the UvA. Since fall 2007 he is director of the bachelor program in Bio-medical Sciences remaining also master track-coordinator. Since 2020 Stanley Brul is director of the College of Life Sciences at the UvA. As of the Academic year 2024-2025 he handed over the BSc biomedical sciences directorship after a third succesful site visit in the framework of an NVAO accreditation. Stanley Brul remains in second term director of the College of Life Sciences until the end of 2026. Recently he was appointed as one of the two the unversity's educational advisory committee members on behalf of the Science Faculty. He is also current member of the Swammrdam research Institute for Life Sciences' MT. His research focuses on bacterial spore formers, their occurrence in the gut microbiome, spore germination and outgrowth physiology, antimicrobial resistance, and analysis of spore germination proteins at single spore level. He spearheaed in the end of 2024 the Amsterdam Microbiome Expertise Center (AMEC) published around 180 papers (H-index 63) and currently focuses also on the physiology of microbial consortia operative in various microbiome niches. We focus on the Gut and Oral Cavity in consortia where we study with partners at the Amsterdam UMC, the Centre for Urban Mental Health and the Dentistry Faculty ACTA, how their behaviour affects the physiology of humans and their sensitivity to the development of Inflammatory Bowl Disorders, Neurological development and Oral Health Challenges. Our studies are sponsored by NWO, NWA, NVWA, EU, and industrial partners. Next to Bacillus subtilis, cereus and Clostridium difficile, the group studies Ruminococcus and Anaerostipes species. Stanley Brul is chair of the Dutch National Association for Biologists and member of the Biology Council. He co-authored as UvA representative and member of the task-force that preceded the council, the Dutch Sector Portrait Biology and later the Sector (investment) Plan Biology that obtained funding from the Minister of Education. He has been chair of the Dutch Society for Microbiology and was its FEMS representative.

With the arrival of dr. Sahar el Aidy as full prof. in Microbiome Engineering (https://www.elaidylab.org/) at the University of Amsterdam's Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences we have strengthened the microbiome area. Together our groups sperheaded Amsterdam Microbiome Expertise Center (AMEC) and have a leading role in the national HOLOMICROBIOME INSTITUTE.

Dubbele bachelor Geneeskunde Bio-medische Wetenschappen Universiteit van Amsterdam
Voor diegenen die een plaats in de Bachelor Geneeskunde AMC-UvA2024-2025 is aangeboden willen we er graag op wijzen dat je je voor de dubbele bachelor Geneeskunde en Biomedische wetenschappen (=arts & onderzoeker) kan aanmelden. Dit speciaal in 2013 samengestelde curriculum bevat zowel Geneeskunde als Biomedische vakken. Het programma is zo gemaakt dat het in drie jaar te volgen is. Na afronding van het programma krijg je twee bachelordiploma’s; een Geneeskunde diploma en een diploma Biomedische Wetenschappen.

De selectiecriteria voor de dubbele bachelor Geneeskunde en Biomedische wetenschappen zijn:
- gemiddelde rond 8 bij je vwo-studie;
- geselecteerd zijn bij Geneeskunde;
- geschikt bevonden na toelatingsgesprek (op basis van motivatie en studiehouding).
Je kan je voor deze dubbele bachelor aanmelden tot en met 15 juni.
Kijk voor het aanmeldingsformulier ook op de site van de dubbele bachelor. Het aantal beschikbare plaatsen is beperkt (maximaal 12-18 studenten). Het toelatingsgesprek zal eind juni plaatsvinden.

De behandeling van kanker, het opsporen van ziektes bij ongeboren kinderen, de speurtocht naar een vaccin tegen aids: het werkterrein van de bio-medische wetenschapper bevindt zich in de frontlinie van de medische wetenschap. Als specialist in de moleculaire basis van leven zijn de onderzoeksresultaten vaak van levensreddende betekenis . Ook kun je met deze studie als expert of hoofd van het diagnostische laboratorium van ziekenhuizen gaan werken. Aansluiting is er voor de hele goede en gemotiveerde student op selectieve research masterprogramma's Biomedical Sciences, de arts-onderzoekers masters AKO (Maastricht) en SUMMA (Utrecht) alsmede het Geneeskunde masters programa met onderzoekersprofiel van VUMC en de zij-instroom van de masters Geneeskunde van het AMC. Deze opleiding wordt aan de UvA gezamenlijk gedragen door de bètafaculteit en het AMC.
Numerus fixus & Geneeskunde. Bio-medische wetenschappen aan de UvA staat voor kwaliteit op theoretisch en praktischvlak. Vanuit die insteek hebben we vanaf 2011 gekozen voor een numerusfixus. Onze numerus fixus staat op 175. In afgelopen jaren hebben we met deze ruime fixus altijd iedereen een plaats kunnen bieden maar dat is geen garantie. We garanderen wel kleinschaligheid in een grootschalige opleiding en voor ieder in jaar 3 een experimentele bachelorstage.
De UvA heeft voor wie op het grensvlak van onderzoek en patienten wil studeren en werken, als enige een dubbele bachelor Biomedische Wetenschappen / Geneeskunde!

Deze links geven highlight colleges over pathogene schimmels (prof. Brul), waarin microbiologie en gastheer-microbe interacties centraal staan, en over aangeboren en verworven metabole ziekten (prof. Aerts) zoals ze in de opleiding worden bestudeerd. De colleges zijn er twee uit een reeks en geven een prachtige illustratie hoe de fundamentele inzichten in de biologie van het menselijk lichaam en microorganismen essentieel zijn om tot goede therapie van ziekten en het, met gerichte interventies, behouden van gezondheid te komen.
