Last week we received the news that emeritus professor Durk Stegwee has passed away at the age of 95. Stegwee was professor of Plant Physiology at the UvA from 1967 to 1987.

Biology students will probably remember him from his standard work Plant Physiology, which was used as a textbook at many universities. His research area included the study of photosynthesis in plants, in particular the role of the protein ferredoxin in this. His successor, Prof. Herman van den Ende, introduced research on the green algae Chlamydomonas at the UvA. Prof. van den Ende passed away last summer.

Professor Stegwee was an active member of the Amsterdam Professors association until around 2005.

Michel Haring, currently Professor of Plant Physiology at Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences: ‘I would like to express my condolences to the family for their loss on behalf of the Plant Physiology group and the Faculty.’
