Biology students will probably remember him from his standard work Plant Physiology, which was used as a textbook at many universities. His research area included the study of photosynthesis in plants, in particular the role of the protein ferredoxin in this. His successor, Prof. Herman van den Ende, introduced research on the green algae Chlamydomonas at the UvA. Prof. van den Ende passed away last summer.
Professor Stegwee was an active member of the Amsterdam Professors association until around 2005.
